Norman D. Triplett (born October 1, 1861 in Perry , Illinois , † 1934 in Manhattan , Kansas ) was an American psychologist .

Life

Triplett attended Perry High School in his birthplace and Illinois College in Jacksonville, and later the University of Indiana . In 1897, Triplett probably carried out one of the first social psychology experiments ever. (Since the Ringelmann experiment took place sometime between 1882 and 1887, it is now considered to be the first ever social-psychological experiment, even if it was only published in 1913, i.e. after Triplet's experiments on social facilitation.) It is one of the classic experiments on activation and Increase in performance in the presence of other people. Triplett observed that racing cyclists are faster when they compete against others than when they race against the clock ( social facilitation theory, so-called pacemaker phenomenon). Three years later, Triplett received his PhD from Clark University with a thesis on The Psychology of Conjuring Deceptions. Triplet was Granville Stanley Hall's second graduate student. In 1931 he retired from active service. In 1934 Triplet died in a hospital in Manhattan , Kansas . Norman Triplett and his wife Laura were buried in the Maplewood Memorial Cemetery in Emporia , Kansas.
