Staffan Normark (born February 28, 1945 in Umeå ) is a Swedish microbiologist at the Karolinska Institutet and a science officer.

Normark acquired in 1966 at the University of Umeå a Bachelor in Medicine and in 1971 a Dr. med. there. He held professorships in microbiology from 1980 to 1989 at Umeå University, from 1989 to 1993 at Washington University and from 1993 at the Karolinska Institutet . In 2012 he retired , but is still scientifically active in the work group of his wife, Birgitta Henriques Normark.

Staffan Normark dealt scientifically with the study of pathogenicity and resistance factors of various bacteria and the interactions between bacteria and their respective hosts . He researched the AmpC- β-lactamases of Escherichia coli , the mechanisms that allow bacteria to attach to mucosal cells (including pili ), and the molecular pathogenesis of pneumococcal infections .

From the mid-1990s Normark belonged to the 50-member Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet, from 1996 to 2001 also to the 5-member Nobel Committee (see Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine # Institutions ). From 1999 to 2005 he was President of the Swedish State Stiftelsen för strategisk forskning (Foundation for Strategic Research). From 2010 to 2015 he was permanent secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .

Staffan Normark has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1987 and a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2019 . In 2018 he received the Robert Koch Medal .
