North American Electric Reliability Corporation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a North American non-profit organization based in Princeton , New Jersey, which is responsible for coordinating the electrical power grids in North America . It was founded on January 1, 2007 as the successor organization to the North American Electric Reliability Council founded in 1968 , also known by the acronym NERC .

The purpose is to secure the electrical energy supply across all operators. She is responsible for the coordination of the supraregional electricity trading and for the technical specifications for the energy exchange between different North American network operators. The spatial coordination area includes several interconnected networks in the United States , Canada, and north of Baja California in Mexico . The NERC is comparable in its function to the Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity (UTCE) in Europe, now ENTSO-E .

Electric power grids in North America

The supraregional power grids in North America are characterized by several larger, mutually asynchronous interconnected networks, in English these areas are referred to as interconnection . As a rule, several energy supply companies work within an interconnection . In this context, asynchronous means that the network frequency of 60  Hz is nominally the same throughout North America, but the individual networks operated with three-phase alternating current cannot be connected directly due to control deviations.

Within the individual interconnected networks, the electrical energy exchange between individual providers and consumers can take place in a technically relatively simple manner , for example by means of overhead lines in the form of high-voltage networks . Exchange between different power grids, however, is only possible to a limited extent and technically complex, for example by means of high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC).

The five largest electrical interconnections in the area of responsibility of the NERC in North America are:

  • The two large interconnected networks
    • Eastern Interconnection (multicolored in the graphic)
      • Florida Reliability Coordinating Council (FRCC)
      • Midwest Reliability Organization (MRO)
      • ReliabilityFirst Corporation (RFC)
      • SERC Reliability Corporation (SERC)
      • Southwest Power Pool, RE (SPP)
    • Western interconnection
      • Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC)
  • The three smaller interconnected networks
    • Québec interconnection
      • Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC)
    • Texas Interconnection
      • Texas Reliability Entity (TRE)
    • Alaska interconnection
      • Alaskan Systems Coordination Council (ASCC), affiliate

As a special feature, the two networks of the Alaska Interconnection have no electrical connection to neighboring networks and are so-called island networks .
