North Ludlow Beamish (born December 29, 1796 , † April 28, 1872 AnnMount at Glanmire ) was a British and Hanoverian lieutenant-colonel and military historian .

origin

His parents were William Beamish , Esquire (born May 10, 1760, † April 17, 1828) and his wife Anne Jane Margaret Delacour († August 8, 1852). His brother Francis Bernard Beamish (born April 5, 1802, † February 1, 1868) was a Member of Parliament and Mayor of Cork .

Life

He went to the academy in Sandhurst and came from there on November 7, 1816 as Cornett to the 4th Dragoon Guards, where he rose to captain and from 1823 to 1826 led his own squadron. As early as 1825 he published a translation of the instructions for the cavalry, which was published by Count Friedrich Wilhelm von Bismarck , who had been commissioned to reorganize the Württemberg cavalry . That got him the attention of some superiors and he was able to go to Hanover - on half pay . There he translated the lectures on the tactics of Reuterei with the original remarks by Bismarck. He made numerous suggestions for improvement, which were soon taken up by the British cavalry.

Through his acquaintance with Bismarck, he became interested in the Kings German Legion , in which the count had also served. He wrote a two-volume work on unity that became the guiding principle for this type of literature. The work was also highly valued by the former members of the Legion and a collection in favor of the author raised 2512.5 Reichstaler .

He then devoted himself to the Vikings and in 1841 published the research of the Danish professor Carl Christian Rafn on the possible discovery of America by the Vikings in England and America. In his translations, he also introduced the audience to the Icelandic sagas .

He was since November 15, 1827 Fellow of the Royal Society and since 1837 Knight of the Hanoverian Guelph Order . In 1852 he was placed à la suite with the Hanoverian army . In 1855 he became sheriff of the city of Cork.
