The lock was built in 1896 by the Thames Conservancy and replaced the flood gates at Hart's Weir (also known as Ridge's Weir ), about 1.6 km upstream and downstream at Ark Weir . The lock keeper's house, the lock and the weir have changed very little since they were built. They can be seen as a group from the Thames Path .

The river above the lock
Above the lock is the Hart's Weir Footbridge on the site of the old weir. It follows the Newbridge at the mouth of the River Windrush . The Great Brook empties just before the mouth of Shifford Lock .
The Thames Path runs to Newbridge on the north side of the river and changes there to the south side to Shifford Lock.
