Northparkes is a mine where copper , silver and gold in New South Wales in Australia mined is. The mine is located approximately 27 kilometers northwest of Parkes .
The North Limited began with the construction of the mine in November 1992, 15 years after the ore deposit 64.1 million tonnes of ore was discovered. Mining began in 1993 in open-cast mining and in 1997 in underground mining at a depth of 480 meters , which at that time was the world's most productive underground mine with automated extraction. In 2000 the mine reached its highest productivity with a production rate of 50,000 tons of ore per employee.
The copper concentrate contains approximately 35% copper, 12.05 grams of gold per ton and 121.6 grams of silver per ton. It is brought by roadtrain to Goonumbla Rail , 13 kilometers away , loaded into containers and from there to Port Kembla near Wollongong , where it is then shipped to smelters in Japan (67%), Australia (14%) and other countries (19%) to become.
The 160 employees of the mine live in the town of Parkes, which has around 12,000 inhabitants. Since 2000, 80% of the shares have been held by the British-Australian Rio Tinto Group and 20% by the Japanese Sumitomo Group .
