The Northrop Grumman LITEF GmbH was founded in 1961 as a subsidiary of the US Litton group in Freiburg founded. In April 2001, Litton Industries was taken over by Northrop Grumman . LITEF GmbH is an independently acting company within the Electronic Systems Division of Northrop Grumman Corporation, USA. The name is derived from LITEF LI tton TE chnical works F reiburg. Seven years after the takeover, the name was changed from LITEF GmbH to Northrop Grumman LITEF GmbH.

Today Northrop Grumman LITEF GmbH is a high technology company with over 700 employees and an annual turnover of more than 120 million euros.

LITEF is one of the market leaders in the sector of navigation and on-board computer systems in the civil and military sectors in Europe. These systems are used in aviation, shipping and land vehicles, with some special applications in geology and space travel. LITEF develops the sensors for their systems in-house.

LITEF is a member of the trade association for industrial companies in Baden .

Beginnings and company development

The reason for founding the company was the purchase of the American F-104G " Starfighter " by the German Air Force . As a compensation deal, the license production of the inertial navigation system in Germany was agreed . LITEF was founded for this purpose, and Litton also took over the Freiburg apparatus construction company Hellige and the Hamburg compass company C. Plath .

Since 1973 LITEF has been developing on-board computers that are used in the Tornado , Alpha Jet and Eurofighter aircraft. On - board computers are also used in aircraft of the Airbus family to support flight control . In the 1980s, LITEF also developed an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) for aircraft.

In the 1970s, the development of a dynamically tuned, dry-stored gyro for strapdown applications began. From 1980 the technologically complementary accelerometer was developed for this. LITEF has been developing fiber optic gyroscopes since 1983. In 1989 LITEF was the first company ever to manage flights with a heading-attitude reference system based on a three-axis fiber - optic gyro package.

LITEF has also been developing micromechanical sensors since the mid-1990s , including both accelerometers and yaw rate sensors. LITEF develops ASICs, develops and produces integrated optical components and micromechanical sensors itself.

LITEF produces inertial course-attitude reference and navigation systems with fiber optic gyroscopes and micromechanical accelerometers.

For several years, the personnel and financial priorities of the development department with more than 100 people have been the new development of silicon-based micro-electro-mechanical sensors and systems (MEMS) - which are manufactured in a dry etching process -, the expansion of functionality and the increase in performance (performance ) of the fiber optic gyro systems.
