Nosheena Shaheen Mobarik, Baroness Mobarik CBE (born October 16, 1957 in Mian Channu , Punjab , Pakistan ) is a British businesswoman and life peer .

Life

Mobarik's father had a business in Pakistan that dealt with the ironing of cotton. She moved to Glasgow with her father when she was five or six . There she graduated from Shawlands Academy before studying economics at Glasgow Caledonian University . During her first year of study, she married Iqbal Mobarik and finally dropped out in the second year due to the impending birth of her first of two children. At the age of 29 she began again to study history and English literature at the University of Strathclyde , which she successfully completed with a BA .

Together with her husband, she founded the software company M Computer Technologies in 1997 . Since 2001 she has been a member of the Council of the Confederation of British Industry Scotland. From 2011 to 2013 she was chairman of this association and has been vice chairman since then.

In the 2014 European elections , she ran for the Scottish Conservatives in third place on the list, but failed to make it into the European Parliament. On September 19, 2014, she was promoted to the status of a Life Peer and has since officially carried the title Baroness Mobarik, of Mearns in the County of Renfrewshire . In the run-up to the referendum on Scottish independence in 2014 , she was clearly in favor of Scotland remaining in the UK and was a member of the Better Together campaign.

Awards and honors

In 2004 she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire ( OBE ), and in June 2014 even Commander ( CBE ).

The Scottish newspaper The Herald named her one of the 50 most influential women in Scotland in 2012.

In August 2012, the Pakistani state awarded her the Order of Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Medal for Outstanding Achievement).

In January 2013 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow .
