The Nostril piercing is a piercing through the left or right nostril and the most common nose piercing.
It is worn by both women and men, but women tend to opt for such a piercing more often. Possible variations consist of several Nostril piercings in a row or jewelry on both sides.
History and culture
Piercing was first practiced in the Middle East around 4000 years ago. From there it went to India in the 16th century. It is often worn in India , preferably on the left nostril, as it is believed to make childbirth easier. This belief is based on Ayurvedic medicine, in which this region is closely related to the female sexual organs.
The women of the Apatani , a tribe in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh , wear a wooden plate with particularly widened piercings in both nostrils in accordance with their ideal of beauty . Perhaps the modifications were originally made to appear unattractive to men from neighboring tribes. However, younger generations have already abandoned this tradition.
The Matis and the women of the Matsé , an indigenous tribe in the Amazon basin , wear multiple piercings in their nostrils, which are reminiscent of the cat's whiskers through the jewelry used . While the Matis use the spines of the peach palm , with which the piercings were pierced, the Matsé wear strips of palm leaves.
In western culture, the American Pauly Unstoppable is known for his above-average widened Nostril piercings.
The piercing on the nostril was discovered in the 1960s and 1970s on hippie trails to India and adapted from the hippie culture . Later, the punk movement also took over piercing. Today it has established itself in a wide variety of youth cultures . Pop stars like Lenny Kravitz , Slash and Dennis Rodman also contributed to the popularization of the Nostril piercing .
In 2010, a North Carolina federal court dealt with the nostril piercing. A 14-year-old student went to court because she was banned from class because of her nose plug. There was a ban on facial piercings at the school. Since the student was a member of the Church of Body Modification denomination, where piercings and tattoos are viewed as religious devotion, the judge ruled that she must be re-admitted to class because the piercing was part of her religious belief.
Sting
Often the Nostril piercing is shot by a jeweler with an ear piercing gun . However, this is not recommended from a medical point of view, as the tissue can tear. It is better to have it pierced with an indwelling venous cannula by a professional piercer . The area of skin to be pierced is first disinfected . Then the puncture site is marked on the top of the nostril and pierced with a special needle . Often a receiving tube is held against it in order to generate counter pressure and intercept the needle before it could injure the nasal septum .
Nose plugs and so-called health plugs, which are also often worn in the ear , as well as labret plugs or ball closure rings can be used for the first time . Because of the many nerves running in the nose, the Nostril piercing can be perceived as particularly painful. Extensions of the trigeminal nerve may be affected. It takes about four weeks to heal.
