The island is located in the west of the Antsiranana province about five kilometers off the coast. It is about two kilometers long in north-south direction and up to 600 meters wide. The highest point in the south of the island reaches a good 100 meters.

In dry valleys it has a diverse, partly endemic flora and fauna. The smallest chameleon species Brookesia micra, discovered in 2007 and described in 2012, lives here . There are a large number of geckos . In August 2015, the discovery of a small population of fat-tailed lemurs, which may be a previously undescribed species, was announced.
