Notícias, also Jornal Notícias , is a Mozambican , Portuguese- language daily newspaper . The editorial office is based in the capital, Maputo . The newspaper is one of the most widely distributed in Mozambique and is considered to be close to the government.

history

Various newspapers from the Portuguese East Africa colony in the 1920s: In the middle an edition of the Notícias

The newspaper was founded in 1906 with the title Notícias de Moçambique and continued by the publishing company Sociedade Notícias, SA founded in 1956 . When this was founded, the largest share belonged to the Portuguese Central Bank and the Banco Nacional Ultramarino . These shares have now passed to the Mozambican Central Bank , so that the newspaper is still state-owned and has thus developed into a mouthpiece for the FRELIMO party, which has ruled since 1975 . For a long time it had a quasi-monopoly in the country together with the radio station Rádio Moçambique and Televisão de Moçambique .

In July 2013, the government dismissed the long-time editor-in-chief, Rogério Sitoe, because he is said to have attended a press conference of RENAMO chairman Afonso Dhlakama in Sadjundjira . He is also said to have been present at the arrest of Jorge Arroz, head of the Mozambican press association, and to have supported Arroz. Sitoe's successor was Jaima Langa.

profile

Since the democratization of Mozambique and the diversification of the media landscape, there have been numerous alternative daily newspapers. In particular, the daily O País , which was renewed in 2008 and is held by Soico Media Group , is considered to be the main competitor of Noticias in Maputo . Nevertheless, the Notícias is particularly preferred by state institutions, especially when it comes to placing advertisements. The Notícias, on the other hand, is particularly close to the government, especially when it comes to election reporting.

There are few independent circulation measurements in Mozambique. According to a study by Celestino Vaz, Notícias has a daily circulation of 16,000 copies, of which 14,120 to subscribers and 1,880 for sale in Maputo and the rest of the country. In some cases, government institutions are required to buy the newspaper.
