O País (Mozambique)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

O País (port. The country ) is a Mozambican , Portuguese- language daily newspaper . The newspaper published in Maputo belongs to the private Soico Media Group , which u. a. also the private television station stv belongs.

history

O País was founded in 2002 as a weekly newspaper, it came into being in a dispute over the journalistic orientation within the newspaper editorial office of Domingo . In 2003 Daniel David , owner of the Soico Media Group, bought the newspaper, since then it has been one of the three media in the Soico Media Group (deputy, sfm and O País) that share a common news desk. The main competitor of the private newspaper, which was relaunched in 2008 and has been published daily with 32 color pages since then, is the state-run Notícias . The newspaper should have a circulation of 30,000 copies per day.

profile

While O País was initially relatively critical of the government, its profile changed over time. During the high inflation in Mozambique in 2010 and the protests that followed, the media group reported continuously on the unrest. As a result, the media group lost the favor of the FRELIMO government and journalists were no longer invited to travel by government representatives. Since then, the reporting has changed and is considered more pro-government. In September 2013, the media group fired the newspaper's editor-in-chief and news officer of the media group, Jeremias Langa, under pressure from the government because he had expressed himself too critical of the government. He was replaced by Olívia Massango.

Soico Media Group has been cooperating with the Chinese state broadcasting association CCTV since 2014 . In a conference paper, Sérgio Chichava, Lara Côrtes and Aslak Orre examined articles from three daily newspapers ( O País , A Verdade and Domingo ) related to China: The authors came to the conclusion that O País' reporting was relatively balanced; H. There were the same number of positive and negative-critical articles on China and Chinese activities in Mozambique during the investigation period.

The STV group also publishes the newspaper O País. In my opinion, however, the quality of this is not as good as the TV station. It is more aimed at business people than at ordinary citizens. "
