Notocheirus hubbsi is a small marine fish that occurs on the coasts of the southwest Atlantic and southeast Pacific from Puerto Deseado (Argentina), around Tierra del Fuego to Valparaíso (Chile). The genus Notocheirus has so far been monotypical and contains only this species. The genus name comes from the Greek ( noton = back, cheir = hands) and was given because of the high-lying pectoral fins. The specific epithet hubbsi was given in honor of the American ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs .

features

Notocheirus hubbsi is a rare species and so far little researched. It is only four to eight inches long. The body is covered by cycloid scales, transparent, elongated and laterally flattened. In contrast to the externally similar genus Iso , the fish only have the second dorsal fin . In the upper jaw, Notocheirus hubbsi carries teeth only on the symphysis of the premaxillary . The pelvis has a lateral extension that extends between the ribs almost to the spine .

Some specimens that have odontodes associated with the lateral line system on their heads may represent a second Notocheirus species that has not yet been described.

Way of life

Notocheirus hubbsi lives in the surf zone and feeds mainly on small copepods as plankton eater . Its fertility is very low. On average, only 71 eggs were found in the ovaries of the females.

Systematics

The species and the monotypic genus were described in 1937 by the American ichthyologist Howard Walton Clark . In 1950 the family Notocheiridae was established for Notocheirus hubbsi and the outwardly very similar genus Iso . Studies from 2012 and 2015, which were carried out using a comparative genetic analysis , however, come to the conclusion that Notocheirus hubbsi can be classified under the New World earfish (Atherinopsidae).
