The Roman Catholic parish church of Bernardswiller in Alsace ( Département Bas-Rhin ) Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption has been classified as a Monument historique since 1934 . It towers over the place and is visible from afar in the plain below the Odilienberg .

history

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary is documented as the first church in Bernardswiller, which was replaced by a larger church between 1495 and 1497. This building was laid down in 1863 to make way for a representative neo-Gothic sacred building that was built in 1866/67. The new church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was built as a three-aisled basilica with a western tower in front, which was modeled on the so-called Kappelturm in neighboring Obernai . A late Gothic tabernacle was taken over from the old church and dates back to 1518.
