The ruins of Notre-Dame-du-Pré was the church of the former Cluniac - priory Donzy-le-Pré in Donzy ( Nièvre ) and belongs with its portal to the most important examples of Romanesque sculpture in Burgundy .

description

The current building was built at the beginning of the 12th century as a three-aisled basilica with a transept and choir with a gallery and chapel wreath. The narthex with the portal system followed around the middle of the 12th century. In the 13th century, the west facade was given a Gothic north tower. The church was destroyed in 1569 and has been in ruins ever since. It is now in the Donzy-le-Pré cemetery.

The transept, choir and crypt have been destroyed to the ground. Only part of the nave and above all the narthex with the Gothic tower and the portal system have survived. The narthex is a three-aisled groin-vaulted hall of two bays with ogival belt and divider arches . (The pointed arches are not a Gothic style element, but a characteristic feature of Cluniac architecture since the end of the 11th century.)

The tympanum shows the enthroned Mother of God in the canopy on three stone slabs , flanked on the left (from the direction of Mary) by the prophet Isaiah and on the right by an angel wielding incense. Stylistically, the sculptures can be compared directly with Vézelay .

In addition to the ruins of the monastery church, there is also the Saint-Martin-du-Pré chapel in Donzy-le-Pré, with a Romanesque portal and capitals (12th century).
