Parish Church of Notre-Dame

Notre-Dame de Venasque is the parish church of the French municipality of Venasque . It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1906 .

architecture

Most of the building dates from the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century, such as the west facade, which was completed with a porch in the 17th century. The bell tower, crowned by a four-sided spire, was rebuilt in the 17th century. The apse , slightly offset from the axis of the nave , is the only remnant of an earlier 11th century building. The choir is under a trumpet dome bearing the attributes of the four evangelists . Chapels were built between the buttresses in the 17th and 18th centuries . One of them contains a painting by an anonymous painter of the Avignon School of 1498 depicting the crucifixion . It also shows the holy bishop Siffrein , who died in Venasque around 570.

Baptistery

North apse of the baptistery

The baptistery next to the church has been classified as a monument historique as a single object since 1840 and is dated to the 6th or 7th century by the French monuments administration. This essentially pre-Romanesque building with apses arranged in the shape of a cross , which is connected to the church by a long colonnade , has caused controversy among archaeologists . Its function as a baptistery was at times questioned, and it was proposed that it be assigned the function of an episcopal burial church. In the work Vie de saint Siffrein ("Life of St. Siffrein") a basilica is mentioned that was built by the holy bishop and in which he was to be buried. The latest research has now given the building back this title, which has attracted attention both for its architecture and for its furnishings. During the Romanesque period, the structure was changed between the 11th and 13th centuries. It was completely restored in the 19th century.
