The Nou Castalia is the municipal football stadium in the Spanish city of Castellón de la Plana , the capital of the province of Castellón in the autonomous region of Valencia . The CD Castellón football club plays its home games in the sports facility.
history
Until 1944 the club played in the Campo del Sequiol with a capacity of about 6,000 seats. In 1941 CD Castellón rose to the top division and a new stadium was built because there was no longer enough space. On November 4, 1944, the Estadio Castalia was opened. In the 1980/81 season, the CD Castellón team was promoted to the Primera División , but the construction of a new stadium failed for the time being. After an away game by CD Castellón in the Mini Estadi of FC Barcelona in the 1985/86 season, it was decided to build a new venue based on the model of the small stadium in Barcelona.
On August 5, 1986, construction work on the Nou Castalia began with costs of 350 million Pts (today the equivalent of 2.1 million € ). The Valencia region shared the costs; the province of Castellón and the city of Castellón de la Plana. Ten months later, on June 17, 1987, the new sports facility was inaugurated with the game CD Castellón against Atlético Madrid . At that time the stadium held 15,000 seats. The stands all around are two-story; with black and white plastic seats occupied by blocks and a covered main grandstand. In the 1989/90 season the club played first class again and the arena was expanded to 18,000 seats. During the renovation in 1996, the capacity was reduced to 14,485 seats.
In the summer of 2005 the capacity increased to 16,000 seats; by u. a. lowered the pitch by three meters. The changing rooms and the press conference room were also renovated. In 2007 the entrances were renewed and new electronic display boards were installed.
