Nurmsi (German also Nurmsi ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Paide ( Paide vald ). It is located in the Central Estonian district of Järvamaa .

Description and history

The village has 103 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2010). It is ten kilometers east of the town of Paide . The settlement was first mentioned in 1564 under the name Nurmis .

Archaeologists have discovered grave sites from the Iron Age near Nurmsi . Both cremated and unburned remains of corpses were found there. Excavations took place in 1905, 1907, 1921/23 and 1943/35.

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, there was an airfield of the Soviet air forces near Nurmsi, near the Mündi moor . The runway with a grass surface was 2,500 meters long. The facility was converted into agricultural land after Estonian independence was regained in the 1990s.
