Nyan Win (2009)

Major General Nyan Win ( Burmese : ဥာဏ်ဝင်း) (born January 22, 1953 ) is a politician in Myanmar . From September 19, 2004 to March 30, 2011 he was the country's foreign minister; since then he has been Chief Minister of the Bago Division .

biography

After attending school, he joined the armed forces (Tatmadaw) in 1973 and graduated from the Defense Academy (Myanmar Defense Services Military Academy). In 1988 he was promoted to commandant of the Command and General Staff College, and in 2001 was appointed deputy head of military training for the armed forces. In 2003 he was promoted to major general .

After the overthrow of Prime Minister Khin Nyunt on October 18, 2004, he became Foreign Minister under the new Prime Minister Soe Win . His predecessor Win Aung had been removed from office along with Khin Nyunt.

As Foreign Minister, he met with his counterpart from Bangladesh in February 2005 to negotiate the readmission of refugees and the construction of roads between the two countries. After the death of the Japanese journalist Kenji Nagai during the demonstrations in Myanmar in September 2007 , diplomatic tensions arose between the two countries. According to an amateur video broadcast on Japanese television, the journalist who was killed the previous day did not appear to have been killed by a ricochet, but to have been knocked to the ground by a member of the military and actually executed. Japan, one of Myanmar's largest donors in the humanitarian field, has asked the regime to provide full clarification. In a conversation with his Japanese counterpart Masahiko Kōmura on the sidelines of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Nyan Win expressed his regret and countered that the protests were 'organized by foreign elements with a view to the General Assembly'.

In September 2009 the US government allowed him (apart from his participation in the UN General Assembly) to visit the USA. This was the first visit by a Myanmar foreign minister since 2000. However, he did not meet an official US government representative, but Jim Webb , a Democratic senator from Virginia who is campaigning for closer ties with the Myanmar military junta.

After his election as Chief Minister of the Bago Division, Nyan Win was replaced as Foreign Minister by Wunna Maung Lwin in March 2011 .
