Nysson trimaculatus is a Hymenoptera from the family of Crabronidae .
features
The wasp reaches a body length of 6 to 8.5 millimeters. The species can be easily distinguished from the other species of the genus Nysson by means of the second sternite, which is strongly angular in profile . Most of the time the first three tergites only have yellow spots on the sides and are not colored red. The legs are usually colored black.
Occurrence
The species is distributed in Europe up to 61 ° north latitude and in Asia, east to Japan. It colonizes both warm and cool sandy habitats, which are also where their hosts occur. The species flies from mid-May to September, and is found in Central Europe.
Way of life
Nysson trimaculatus parasitized in the grave wasp gorytes laticinctus whose nests dig the females. Eggs are laid in the cell under a wing of the cicadas brought in by the host species. This protects it from the female host who may still care for the nest. After the eggs have been laid, the nest entrance is closed again. The parasitoid larvae hatch quickly and first eat the host egg and then feed on the supplies.
