Gorytes laticinctus is a hymenoptera fromthe Crabronidae family . It is the most common type of the genus in Central Europe.

features

The wasp reaches a body length of 10 to 13 millimeters (females) or 9 to 12 millimeters (males). The compound eyes hardly converge downwards. The lobe on the pronotum is colored black, the metapleurs have longitudinal folds. The clypeus is yellow in the female with the exception of the black front edge. The males wear wide yellow bands on the tergites of the abdomen. The similar Gorytes quadrifasciatus differs from the species by a black colored clypeus and only narrow yellow tergite bands. Gorytes albidulus is distinguished by its white tergite bands.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in North Africa, Europe up to 62 ° north latitude and in Turkey. It colonizes various warm to cool habitats with sand or loamy sand, such as forest edges and ruderal meadows. It also occurs in human settlements and has been proven up to 750 meters above sea level. The animals fly from June to early September. The species is common.

Way of life

The adults are often found on umbellifers . The females create their nests both in the sandy soil and on broken edges. Nests have also been found in flower pots. The nests are created about 10 centimeters deep and consist of three to four cells that branch off from short side passages. The brood is supplied with foam cicadas of the genus Philaenus . Nysson trimaculatus , Nysson niger and Nysson spinosus have been identified as cuckoo wasps .
