Gorytes is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. 55 species are known, 34 of which are found in the Palearctic . There are 17 species distributed in Europe, and there are probably 10 in Central Europe.

features

As with the similar genus Argogorytes , many species of the genus have the appearance of solitary wasps (Eumeninae) due to their yellow-banded abdomen . One can distinguish the two groups by the wing-folding method, which is not done lengthways in the digger wasps. Species identification is usually difficult.

Way of life

The females create their nests individually or in groups. They reach about 12 centimeters deep and contain up to four cells. The brood with imagos and nymphs of cicadas of the families of leafhoppers (Cicadellidae), Fulgoridae , cercopidae (Cercropidae) and treehoppers supplied (Membracidae). Depending on the size, four to 19 cicadas are introduced per cell. If the female flies out, the nest entrance is always closed. The prey is transported in flight and is mainly held in place with the middle pair of legs. The egg is laid lengthways on the underside of the thorax of the last prey. The larva hatches after about four days.

The digger wasps are parasitized by various meat flies (Sarcophagidae) and Nysson species.
