The MC 700 N is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive from the manufacturer Orenstein & Koppel , which was designed for use on industrial railways and shunting services .

history

1st generation

In 1971, production of the 700 hp machine began at the Dortmund-Dorstfeld plant. The basis of the design was the MC 500 N, which, however, had a weaker drive. The demand for the MC 700 N remained low, however, only three locomotives were produced.

Bayer AG acquired two of them and stationed one machine in Leverkusen and one in Dormagen . The locomotive, based in Leverkusen, was sold in 1996 via OnRail in Mettmann to a Hamburg steelworks, which today belongs to the ArcelorMittal group. Stationed in Dormagen locomotive came into the Saarland to blast furnace operators Rogesa . The third locomotive, manufactured in 1972, was delivered to Westfälische Transport AG in Berlin-Spandau , which shortly thereafter merged with Rhenus Transport GmbH to form Rhenus AG . In 2006 she was sold to Italy.

2nd generation

The competitors Orenstein & Koppels, including MaK , Henschel and Gmeinder , were able to come up with more efficient and modern machines in the mid-1970s. Therefore, O & K also revised its range of shunting locomotives. The MC 700 N was redesigned from scratch. Outwardly, this was particularly noticeable through the changed locomotive body , which was no longer rounded, but angular and should appear more contemporary. Three customers each ordered two copies of the MC 700 N: Hoesch - Hüttenwerke , Mannesmann and the railways of the city of Monheim . After a few years, Hoesch sold its locomotives to the Dortmund Railway , while the Mannesmann locomotives are now working for ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe . Only the railways of the city of Monheim used their two locomotives, named Max and Moritz , until December 2014 to operate their own rail network and for occasional special trips. BSM has discontinued its own rail freight transport. The locomotives are currently for sale.
