history
Michael O'Leary, originally from Ireland , settled in the region in 1837 and the place was named O'Leary in his honor. After a railway line passed there, the settlement quickly became a service center for the area. Coal sheds and water tanks were built to supply the steam locomotives and repair workshops were built. After the end of the heyday of the railway industry, agriculture, in particular the cultivation of potatoes, became the main livelihood of the inhabitants. The history of this branch of industry is presented in the Canadian Potato Museum . In the field of sports, the place has a long tradition in ice hockey and calls itself Hockeyville PEI or Hockeytown PEI .
