OBY 1

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

OBY 1 (also OBY 1) is a computer game by the German developer Andreas Mettler that offers various skill exercises, brain teasers and duels for robots. It was released under the label Magic Soft by Software 2000 in 1991 for the computers C64 , Amiga and Atari ST .

description

The player controls a robot (OBY 1) and has the task of sealing radioactive leaks. To do this, he pushes stones over the playing field equipped with obstacles until they have reached a radioactive leak. The stones have different ranges and can be fixed at the target. Some scenarios are intended as exercises of skill, others as brain teasers. In the two-player mode, the tasks can also be played as a duel. The game instructions expressly allow the players to decide whether the scenarios should be solved cooperatively or as a competition. 10 scenarios are available for single player mode and 20 for two player mode.

Systems and version differences

The game was released in 1991 for the Commodore 64, the Amiga and the Atari ST at the same time. It was originally developed by Andreas Mettler for the Commodore 64. The developer was also responsible for the graphic design and the music. The Amiga and Atari ST versions were programmed by Matthias Müller. The music for these two versions was composed by Hans-Hermann Frank. The Amiga version contains additional background graphics that were created by Pixlers Studio in Vienna. The game came back on the market in 2005 in Thomas Steiding's C64-Classix collection on CD-ROM .

particularities

OBY 1 - two player mode

Choice of scenarios

OBY 1 dispenses with a selection menu for the scenarios and the player modes in the actual sense and instead offers its own menu scenario for selecting the next game. The player moves the robot to the desired platform with a one-player or two-player scenario and starts the game.

Waiver of scoring

The game dispenses with point evaluation and highscore specification. If a scenario is solved, the robot jumps up three times and the selection scenario is displayed again. All scenarios can be selected directly.

Use of subliminal technology

The game experimented with motivational suggestions of the subliminal technique. At irregular intervals, terms such as "Super" or "Great" are displayed over the player sprites for a fraction of a second. These are deliberately barely noticeable for the player and can only be recognized by a brief flickering of the game pieces.
