The oligoadenylate synthetase 1 (synonymous 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetase 1 , OAS1) is an adenylyl synthetase and a resistance factor against viruses .

properties

The gene expression of OAS1 by interferons initiated. After binding dsRNA from adenosine triphosphate, OAS1 generates 2'-5'-oligoadenylate. The 2'-5'-oligoadenylate activates RNase L, which causes the breakdown of RNA in a cell . This temporarily reduces gene expression in the cell.

If an infection with West Nile virus OAS1 is by a stem-loop - secondary structure at the 5'-end of the viral RNA activated. Certain mutations in the OAS1 gene lead to an increased susceptibility to infections with West Nile viruses. Some mutations are prognostic markers for the course of multiple sclerosis .
