The Grupo de Observadores de las Naciones Unidas en Centroamérica (German observation group of the United Nations for Central America , ONUCA ) was based on UN resolution 644 of November 7, 1989 and was deployed in Central America from November 1989 to January 1992 .
The aim of the UN mandate was to monitor the commitments made by Costa Rica , El Salvador , Guatemala , Honduras and Nicaragua to disengage troops and demobilize parties to the conflict. The ONUCA mission was managed from the headquarters in Tegucigalpa / Honduras. 260 military observers , an infantry fighting unit of almost 800 men , as well as troops and support staff from an air wing and a naval unit were deployed.
