The Misión de Observación de las Naciones Unidas en El Salvador (German: United Nations Observer Mission in El Salvador , ONUSAL ) was based on UN resolution 693 of May 20, 1991 and was deployed in El Salvador from July 1991 to April 1995 .

The aim of the UN mandate was to monitor the implementation of the agreement between the government of El Salvador and the rebel group FMLN , which ended a 12-year civil war .

The operation was led from the headquarters in San Salvador . The Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of the Mission was Iqbal Riza from Pakistan from July 1991 to March 1993 , Augusto Ramírez-Ocampo from Colombia from April 1993 to March 1994 and Enrique ter Horst from Venezuela from April 1994 to September 1995 , who was led by Ricardo Virgil from September from Peru , as he himself took over this function for the MINUSAL mission from September 1995. The chief military observer was the Spanish Brigadier General Víctor Suanzes Pardo . From March 1992 to April 1994 General Homero Vaz Bresque from Uruguay and from May 1994 to March 1995 Comisario Principal Alfredo Carballo from Spain were responsible for the police service component . The troops were provided by Argentina , Brazil , Chile , Ecuador , France , Guyana , India , Ireland , Italy , Canada , Colombia, Mexico , Norway , Austria , Sweden , Spain and Venezuela. Three civilian police observers and two other civilian employees of ONUSAL were killed during the mission.
