OPUS is free software under the GNU General Public License for operating a document server . It provides tools for recording, storing and disseminating digital resources and is mostly used in universities , libraries and research facilities for an "institutional repository".

history

OPUS, originally as the acronym for online publication network of the University of Stuttgart , was developed by the computer center and the university library at the University of Stuttgart in 1997 and 1998 with the support of the DFN -verein . OPUS is used at numerous universities and library networks and was further developed cooperatively until 2010.

Since December 2010 the Cooperative Library Association Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV) at the Konrad-Zuse-Center for Information Technology Berlin has taken over the development and management of the project. The abbreviation OPUS has not been used as an acronym since then, as the local reference to the University of Stuttgart no longer exists.

In Germany, the OPUS software is most commonly used for the operation of open access - repositories used (a 2012 carried out census identified a frequency of 77 repositories based on OPUS, booth 2019, more than 100 repositories based on OPUS in operation). OPUS is operated both independently by the universities and as part of hosting offers by the German library associations. The largest OPUS hosting offers in Germany are operated by the KOBV and the Library Service Center Baden-Württemberg (BSZ), each with over 50 instances.

development

The development of the current version OPUS 4 is carried out by the KOBV at the Konrad-Zuse-Center for Information Technology Berlin.

The earlier development work was coordinated by the Baden-Württemberg Library Service Center and the Stuttgart University Library . The main development partners were the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB), Bielefeld University Library , Saarland University and State Library Saarbrücken (SULB), University Library of the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg , Cooperative Library Association Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV) and University Library Center of North Rhine-Westphalia (hbz).

technology

OPUS 3.x is written in PHP 4. The successor OPUS 4 is developed in PHP 7.1 and is based on the Zend Framework and the Solr search engine . The data is stored in a MySQL database. Both versions are designed for LAMP environments.

Functionality

Original functionalities were or are currently being revised:

  • OPUS is a simple container system for any objects and formats. These can be introduced, managed and provided with descriptive data (metadata) via a web interface. Except for a full text search, the objects themselves are not processed further on the server side. The metadata can in turn be transferred to various search services (search engines, German National Library, Southwest German Library Association, OAI service provider, etc.).
  • OPUS supports Uniform Resource Names (URN) and Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) for persistent identification.
  • OPUS has a license module with which different usage licenses ( DPPL , Creative Commons etc.) can be set up and offered for objects.
  • OPUS supports the OAI- PMH 2.0 protocol.
  • OPUS supports the XMetaDiss format of the German National Library .
  • OPUS supports the XMetaDissPlus format of the Baden-Württemberg Library Service Center .
  • OPUS uses checksums to ensure the authenticity of the documents.
  • OPUS 4.6+ offers an interface for Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit (SWORD Version 1.3).
  • OPUS 4.6+ offers support for the automatic generation and registration of DOIs at DataCite.
