Emergence

As with many Internet phenomena, the exact reason why it occurred is not known. Nevertheless, the Windows Me operating system is repeatedly cited as the cause, which is said to have caused displeasure due to its unstable operation. As a result, a personification emerged in the Japanese Futaba Channel in 2003 , which, due to its capricious and annoying nature, should correspond to this system. Based on this basic idea, characters have also developed for other operating systems, which are said to have certain character traits. Naming

The front part of the name "OS" is derived from the abbreviation of the English term for an operating system . The suffix-tan ” ( た ん ) is a deliberately incorrectly pronounced “chan” ( ち ゃ ん ), which is added to the name of the person addressed in non-formal salutations in Japanese. Such a mispronunciation is often found in children ( baby talk ) and is considered an additional belittling ( kawaii ). This ending is often found in the names of mascots .

Known personifications

ME-tan
ME-tan (in a variant without braids)
As the personification of the Windows Me operating system , it is characterized by a strong analogy to a dojikko . So she never really succeeds in what she wants to achieve in the representations and she falls down to the confusion of her siblings at every opportunity. This is especially intended to characterize the likelihood of Windows ME crashing . If it is not "frozen" or out of control, it shows little reason and understanding of the world. So things like warming up soft drinks in the microwave are nothing special. She defends herself against possible attacks with a leek , which is an allusion to the firewall NEGiES , whose name in Japanese is similar to the pronunciation of leek ( negi ). Its design changed only slightly over time due to the influence of various artists. She has green hair that is braided into two long pigtails and an upright strand of hair ( ア ホ 毛 , ahoge , aho = "fool, fool", ge = "hair"). She usually wears a blue and white maiden costume with a button on her red scarf, which is designed as an allusion to the yellow error symbol on Windows.
2K-tan
Usually this representation of Windows 2000 is described as intelligent, clarified and reserved. Visually she appears as Meganekko with blue, pinned up hair reminiscent of cat ears, in the middle of which a white flounce rises. As clothing, she mostly wears a blue swimsuit with a long coat. It should act as a symbol for the fact that Windows 2000 is the most stable of the operating systems from the Windows family and is often used as ME-tan's guardian angel according to the action.
