Obeidi (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Obeidi (also Obedi , Oubeidi , Obaideh and Obaidy ) is an indigenous , Lebanese grape that usually dry expanded or brandy , or arrack is processed. In addition to the white Merwah variety, it is considered the last of the old, genuine , indigenous white wine grapes even in Lebanon . The phylloxera , which ruined many wine-growing regions in Europe for a long time at the end of the 19th century, never got here.

Ampelography

According to recent studies, this grape variety is not related to either Chardonnay or Chasselas , as was long believed. The small-berry, not very compact grapes are sensitive to oxidation, rich in extracts and, despite the low acid content in the developed wine, have a high aging potential of around ten years.

character

The Lebanese winegrowing association Union Vinicole du Liban supports the efforts of local winemakers to further develop this grape variety and make it better known. Hugh Johnson compares the grape to Chardonnay in terms of taste and potential. The wines often have a creamy structure and flavors of honey and lemon. Expansion in the wood gives it an additional structure that promotes aging. Most of the Obeidi wines are blended with Chardonnay, Semillon or Merwah; single-varietal qualities rarely come onto the market.
