The former Oberbahnamt Rosenheim is a monument in the independent city of Rosenheim (Upper Bavaria), Südtiroler Platz 2.

Architecture and interior design

The former Royal Bavarian Upper Railway Authority of Rosenheim on Südtiroler Platz is a simple neoclassical building. The symmetrical building has a ridge height of 14.60 m, a width of 13.1 m and a length of 22 m. It has seven axes, is four-storey, and the rusticated base storey is followed by two smoothly plastered storeys set off by cornices and a flat mezzanine . The hipped roof with a wide roof overhang has a slope of 20 °. It is covered with subsequently applied sheet metal because the old roof covering had become leaky.

The west side of the building has no decorations, as this side faces away from the station and was therefore not accessible to the public. In the middle of the front a simple portal with a heavy coffered wooden door opens. The building has a central half-turned wooden staircase with a cast iron railing and a wooden handrail. Most of the tiles and parquet have been laid on the ground floor.

Condition of the building (2012)

The upper floor can no longer be entered because the stairs are in danger of collapsing after water damage. Due to the rising damp in the basement, the plaster crumbles from the wall and forms salt stains. The building shows significant damage to windows, masonry, the stairs, as well as the doors, the roof and the sanitary facilities.

On October 24, 1857, the first train of the Munich – Rosenheimer Bahn drove to the provisional station at Roßacker. This line was opened as part of the Bavarian Maximiliansbahn , a section of the connection from Paris to Vienna. In 1858 the first train station in Rosenheim went into operation, today's town hall, and the Rosenheim engine shed . These buildings were of a very high quality as these constructions were supposed to represent the city.

As an extension of the Bavarian Maximiliansbahn, the Royal Bavarian State Railways opened the Rosenheim – Kufstein border line on August 5, 1858 and the Rosenheim – Salzburg line on August 12, 1860 . This made Rosenheim an important traffic junction. Because the previous station facility was no longer able to cope with the number of passengers, the city decided in 1872 to relocate the station to the west of the city. In March 1873, King Ludwig II approved the project and in April 1873 the earthworks for the station began.

As of January 1, 1876, the Königliche Oberbahnamt was the first authority to establish Rosenheim's function as a central location for southeast Bavaria. At that time, a total of 10 senior railway offices were set up as enforcement and supervisory authorities in the railway sector in the major railway hubs in Bavaria. With the election of Rosenheim as the seat of one of these offices, the city became one of the most important centers in Bavaria for the first time. The Rosenheim Railway Directorate was also affected. Construction of the building began in 1875 under the direction of the architect Jakob Graff and was completed in 1876. From 1894 the building only served as a residential building for employees of the railway after the Royal Railway Authority moved to a new building on the northwest corner of the station forecourt.

In the course of centralization measures by the Bavarian State Railways , five of the 10 railway directorates, as the Oberbahnamt were called since September 7th, 1901, were closed on February 28, 1907, including the Rosenheim Oberbahnamt. Your area of ​​responsibility was now administered by the Munich Railway Directorate. To compensate for the loss of the authority, Rosenheim became the headquarters of the insurance office of the Kgl. Bay. Transport authorities, the later social security office of the railway.

The Lord Mayor of Rosenheim, Gabriele Bauer , has been interested in preserving the only remnant of the old train station, which survived the Second World War unscathed, since October 2009 .
