The Rosenheim locomotive shed is an exhibition center in downtown Rosenheim , which was created in 1988 by converting the machine house of the first railway workshop in Rosenheim .

history

Rosenheim workshop

With the opening of the Maximiliansbahn from Munich to Kufstein in 1858, an operating workshop of the Bavarian State Railway was established in Rosenheim . The centerpiece of the system was a massive 19-person semicircular shed with a turntable and head structures on the front sides of the machine house. The workshop was built to the west of the tracks at the level of the reception building and put into operation on November 13, 1858. Soon it was no longer possible to adapt the existing station facility to the growing volume of traffic, so in 1872 an application was made to relocate the station to its current location. After the commissioning of the new Rosenheim station in 1876, the existing facilities were abandoned and the land and buildings were sold to the city of Rosenheim two years later.

Urban warehouse

In the following years, the locomotive shed was used as a municipal warehouse and the reception building opposite as the town hall. In 1884, a single-storey connecting building was built between the head buildings. In 1898 part of the warehouse was damaged by fire and rebuilt in an expanded form. Another fire damaged the engine shed in 1921. When it was rebuilt the following year, the building received the pent roof that still exists today .

Archives, library and gym

In 1928, a three-storey warehouse was built in place of the connecting structure between the head structures of the locomotive shed. In 1931 the town archive and the town library were housed in the engine shed itself. A year later, part of the shed was converted into a gym . The neighborhood help and workers welfare moved into the head buildings. After 1952, the head buildings were partially used by municipal authorities.

Monument protection and renovation

In 1983 the former station building and the semicircular building of the former workshop including the head buildings were added to the list of monuments of the city of Rosenheim . The demolition of the warehouse between the head buildings made it possible to use the semicircular space in front of the shed as a parking lot.

In 1986 an architectural competition was held for the renovation and conversion of the locomotive shed into an event center. The winner, Professor Joseph Karg from Munich, was entrusted with the further planning work. The locomotive shed was awarded in 1988 by the Association of German Architects for the effective combination of a historic building with contemporary additions.
