Veste Oberhaus in the Middle Ages

history

The chapter in Passau's museum history begins in 1885 and is closely linked with the name Anton Niederleuthner (1845–1907). In his endeavors to open up Passau and the Bavarian Forest to tourism, Niederleuthner had expanded the observation tower of the military penal institution and the former fortress into a kind of "museum". In 1931 the Veste Oberhaus became the property of the City of Passau. This in turn decided in 1932 to set up a museum, whereby the existing municipal museum, which was housed in the town hall , was moved to the rooms of the upper house. The opening could take place in autumn. On May 20, 1933, it was opened as the "Ostmarkmuseum" with some modifications and extensions. After the turmoil of World War II, it was reopened as the Upper House Museum in 1952.

Permanent exhibitions

Passau - Myth and History

Fountain figure

An exhibition area that was opened in 2007 after the renovation and completion of the new concept. On about 1000 m² the visitor gets a comprehensive insight into the rich history of the city of Passau from the Celtic beginnings to the end of the prince-bishopric in 1803. A historical overview is offered through thematic focal points such as elevation to the bishopric and development to the bishopric .

The fascination of the Middle Ages - earthly life and heavenly striving

The largest exhibition complex is entitled Fascination of the Middle Ages - Earthly Life and Heavenly Striving . The earthly life part of the exhibition focuses on life in a medieval castle. Using the example of Veste Oberhaus (which can be seen as a castle itself as an architectural exhibit), an insight into the zeitgeist and living conditions of the people is offered. For example, the dining and living culture and leisure time behavior of the time are illustrated. In a specially furnished dark cold room, the light and temperature conditions in the castle can be experienced as they were more than 500 years ago.

In Heavenly Striving , the connection between art and religion is examined in more detail. Numerous important panel paintings, reliefs, sculptures and votive offerings provide an overview of popular piety and pilgrimage at the time .

The secret of the brotherhood

As the mystery of the Brotherhood another exhibition of the museum's upper house is called. Aspects of the guild and craft are shown here. It deals with the different forms of professional and civil associations such as guilds and brotherhoods. The exhibition is housed in the former cellar of the so-called Fürstenbau. The vaulted rooms help to immerse oneself in the 16th century and to be instructed, for example, in the art of candle-makers or blacksmiths in various workshops in central places in the city of Passau.

Further permanent exhibitions

Passau porcelain

The series of exhibitions can be continued: porcelain collection , historical pharmacy , fire brigade museum or Bohemian Forest museum , which is a separate department within the upper house museum. It is looked after by the association Böhmerwaldmuseum Passau e. V. and shows the history of the parts of the settlement of the Bohemian Forest of German origin and their later expulsion and resettlement.

Hans Wimmer Collection

Modern art

The Hans Wimmer Collection (1907–1992) was opened in 1987 in the Oberhaus Museum . It is essentially based on a donation by Hans Wimmer to the city of Passau and provides an overview of the work and creations of this important German sculptor. Whether portrait busts, life-size sculptures or small sculptures, the permanent exhibition, which Wimmer helped to design, provides a comprehensive compilation of his creative period.

Museum education

Historic pharmacy

For children, school groups or kindergarten groups, there are thematic tours and special creative programs that invite you to experience art and culture with all your senses. As part of museum education, the Oberhausmuseum offers work techniques that are primarily intended to implement and deepen impressions that were previously gained in a guided tour of the exhibitions or special exhibition. For example, the museum offers panel painting or fresco painting under the title Vermillion artist workshop.

Children have the opportunity to celebrate their birthday with a special program in the museum or with a hand puppet tour of the Lumumba court theater.

The Upper House also offers special events for adults. A variety of offers have been developed for a wide variety of visitor groups: Family Sundays, art events, special tours and numerous events are on the program as well as workshops and the Castle Festival, which was first launched by the Lower Bavaria State Theater in 2009.

Battery Linde

One of the most beautiful places in the castle complex. Surrounded by one of the oldest defensive walls of the fortress Oberhaus, the viewing platform offers a view of the city of Passau and the confluence of the three different colored rivers Inn , Danube and Ilz .
