Upper Rhine poets' circle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Upper Rhine Poets' Circle was an informal literary group that gathered around Johann Georg Jacobi . It existed from Jacobi's appointment to Freiburg in 1784 until his death in 1814.

Jacobi was appointed to the University of Freiburg im Breisgau in 1784 by Emperor Joseph II . He soon succeeded in gaining a group of poets who used the magazine "Iris", which he published, as a forum. The group included Maria Therese von Artner , Karl WLF Drais von Sauerbronn , Johann Peter Hebel , Joseph Albrecht von Ittner , Gottlieb Konrad Pfeffel , Johann Georg Schlosser , brother-in-law Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Ernst Münch and Ignaz Heinrich Karl Freiherr von Wessenberg .
