Joseph Albrecht von Ittner

Joseph Albrecht von Ittner, also Joseph Albert von Ittner (born March 2, 1754 near Bingen (Rheinhessen), † March 9, 1825 in Konstanz ), was a German writer , lawyer and diplomat. 1786–1806 he was Chancellor of the Grand Priory of Germany of the Order of Malta and the rule of Heitersheim .

Life

Martin's Catholic son, an auditor in a regiment of the Electorate of Mainz , and Maria Franziska Heimes studied law in Mainz and Göttingen . He worked as a lawyer at the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Wetzlar, the Reichstag in Regensburg and the Reichshofratskanzlei in Vienna.

He then worked as a councilor and archivist to Prince Josef Friedrich Wilhelm von Hohenzollern-Hechingen . In 1786 he became Chancellor of the Grand Priory of Germany of the Order of Malta in Heitersheim .

After the Peace of Bratislava he was employed in the Baden state service from 1805 . 1806–1807 he carried out the secularization of the St. Blasien monastery on behalf of the Grand Duke . He was then a curator at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . He also represented Baden 1807-1818 as envoy to the federal diets . In 1812 he became director of the Seekreis in Constance.

Ittner belonged to the Upper Rhine poet circle around Johann Georg Jacobi . Among his friends were Joseph von Laßberg , Ignaz Heinrich von Wessenberg , Heinrich Zschokke and Heinrich Schreiber . Even Therese von Artner spent several weeks with him in Heitersheim.

Through his botanical studies he came into contact with Karl Christian Gmelin , who named the genus of the mermaid herb Ittnera (CCGmel.) In his honor . Ittner was also active in the short-lived Patriotic Society of Doctors and Naturalists in Swabia .

Marriage and offspring

Ittner married Walburga Frank in Hechingen, the daughter of the Chancellor of Hohenzollern-Hechingen , Johann Daniel Marianus Frank. He had four children with her:

  • Karoline (or Charlotte) (* 1784)
  • Franz (February 11, 1787 - August 29, 1821)
