The Oberst Brecht (A601) is a patrol boat of the Austrian Armed Forces that was decommissioned in 2006 after 48 years of service.
history
The Oberst Brecht (A601) was built in the Korneuburg shipyard and launched on January 20, 1958. The first exit took place on May 16, 1958, before being handed over to the Austrian Armed Forces on October 14, 1958 as the first boat of a planned nine-boat Danube flotilla. For budgetary reasons, however, in addition to the Oberst Brecht (A601), only the Lower Austria (A604) was implemented, both of which were used in the patrol boat squadron .
The Colonel Brecht (A601) was named after Colonel Friedrich Brecht , the first pioneer inspector of the 2nd Armed Forces, who was born on December 11, 1908 and who died shortly before the ship was completed.
The first on-board sniper shooting was carried out on September 27, 1973 in the Schlögener Schlinge .
From 2003 to 2004 the Colonel Brecht (A601) was completely overhauled and heavily modified by the Pioneer Troop School, with the support of the Office for Defense Technology. a. The cab was extended across the entire width of the boat, the window areas were greatly reduced, the mast tilted backwards was removed and a new camouflage paint was applied.
assignment
- Shipping police assistance tasks in conjunction with the shipping police , the executive and customs
- Disaster relief
- Securing and monitoring the Danube in times of crisis
- Assertion of Austrian interests, if necessary by force of arms
The boat was also used to push pontoon ferries, as a tug boat, as a training boat for motorboat and skipper license courses, for echo sounder measurement of river profiles and the like.
Current status
Since the Army History Museum is subordinate to the Federal Ministry for National Defense (BMLV) and Colonel Brecht (A601) was not formally scrapped, but only decommissioned, she continues to be part of the armament of the Federal Army. Re-employment is also possible, but unlikely for military and budgetary reasons. The Oberst Brecht (A601) is currently together with the Lower Austria (A604) in the Korneuburg shipyard and can be viewed there.
