The "Niederösterreich" (A604) is a gunboat designed patrol boat of the Austrian Armed Forces . It was decommissioned in 2006.

history

The Lower Austria patrol boat at the Reichsbrücke in Vienna

The Lower Austria in 1970 as the second boat of a planned flotilla of the armed forces on the Danube put into service. However, for budgetary reasons, this association, originally designed for nine ships, was not implemented. The Lower Austria thus remained the last boat that was purchased. The planning was carried out by MAIERFORM SA from Geneva , Switzerland . The boat was finally built in the Korneuburg shipyard .

In addition to Colonel Brecht , Lower Austria was part of the army's patrol boat squadron until 2006 , which was stationed in the Magdeburg barracks in Klosterneuburg and was subordinate to the pioneers . In the course of the 2010 army reform , this was dissolved and Lower Austria was decommissioned. The automatic cannon was then dismantled and the boat handed over to the Museum of Military History . The "Austrian Navy Association" takes care of the maintenance through the "Naval Comradeship Admiral Archduke Franz Ferdinand".

tasks

During the Cold War, the tasks of the patrol boat squadron mainly consisted of supporting the maritime and river police in controlling ships coming from the Eastern Bloc. These controls were mainly carried out during army maneuvers to prevent eavesdropping.

Current status

Since the Army History Museum is subordinate to the Federal Ministry for National Defense (BMLV) and Lower Austria was not formally scrapped, but only decommissioned, it is still part of the armament of the Federal Army. Re-employment is theoretically possible, but unlikely for military and budgetary reasons. The Lower Austria is currently shared with the Colonel Brecht in the shipyard Korneuburg and can be visited there.
