Distribution of the Ochyroceratidae

The Ochyroceratidae (from Gr. Ὀχυρός (ochyrós) "durable, firm" and κέρας (kéras) "horn") are a family of real spiders comprising 15 genera and 188 species . (As of June 2016)

The family belongs to the superfamily of the Leptonetoidea . They are widespread in the tropics (South Africa, Caribbean, Asia, Indo-Pacific), where they inhabit the litter layer of forests. In Central Europe no species of the family are native. They weave small sheet nets around leaves, horse mackerel and twigs. The females typically carry their egg sacs with the chelicerae around with them until the young spiders hatch.

At least one species in the genus Theotima , the only 0.9 mm large Theotima minutissima , was found to be parthenogenic . In parthenogenesis, females are able to reproduce unisexually, i.e. without being fertilized by a male.

Systematics

The World Spider Catalog currently lists 15 genera and 188 species for the Ochyroceratidae. (As of June 2016)
