The Plectreuridae (to gr. Πλέκτρα ( pléktra ) "wattle" and εὐρύς ( eurýs ) "broad, wide") are a family of real spiders and include only two genera with 31 species . (As of June 2016)
distribution
The species occur in North and Central America . There they occur in the arid climates of the southwestern United States , in scattered locations in southern and eastern Mexico, as well as in Costa Rica and Cuba .
description
The Plectreurys species have strong legs and the males have strong hooks on the first pair of legs, which they presumably use to hold the females while mating. They are ecribellate , haplogyne spiders that can be considered relatively primitive. Aside from their smaller size, Plectreurys are similar to trapdoor spiders . The genus Kibramoa , in the family Sicariidae until 1958 , has thinner legs and the males do not have mating hooks on their legs.
Way of life
They are free hunting spiders. They weave living tubes in dark crevices of walls, bridges or in the ground as well as in the litter layer on the ground, which are provided with a brim made of silk. At night they leave their silk rooms and go hunting. They have eight eyes and, like other members of the Pholcoidea superfamily , only the two front book lungs (fan trachea).
Systematics
The World Spider Catalog currently lists two genera and 31 species for the Plectreuridae. (Status: February 2016)
