Ocrasa is agenus of butterflies from the family of the common borer (Pyralidae). There are four species in Europe and two in German-speaking countries.

features

The species of the genus Ocrasa reach a wingspan of up to 32 millimeters. The forewings are usually more than twice as long as they are wide. The basic color of the upper side of the forewings is usually a dark to light brown, which can be yellowish to reddish. In a few species there are other colors. Two lighter transverse lines are characteristic, which are almost always clearly developed on the front wing, but are usually paler on the rear wing. The transverse lines can be almost straight or curved; they can be significantly thickened at the front edge. Their color varies from whitish to yellowish. On the hind wings the two transverse lines are closer; the outer transverse line is further from the outer edge. The fields of the front wings can be colored uniformly or differently. The antennae of the males are short and double ciliate, those of the females are simple and thread-shaped.

Distribution and occurrence

The types of the genus are distributed worldwide. They prefer dry and warm habitats in the open, bushy landscape.

Way of life

The moths are mostly nocturnal, some fly both during the day and at night. The caterpillars feed mainly on vegetable detritus (hay, straw, leaves). They live in ghost tubes in detritus. The development cycle of many species is poorly known.

Synonymy

The genus has two synonyms : Bleone Ragonot, 1890 and Orthopygia Ragonot, 1890. Some species have also been described under the generic name Herculia . However, this name is a more recent synonym of Hypsopygia Hübner, 1825. Slamka (2006) lists Ocrasa as a sub-genus of Hypsopygia Hübner, 1825. In contrast, GlobIZ regards it as an independent genus. The Fauna Europaea accepted Orthopygia Ragonot, 1890 as a subgenus of Ocrasa .

Systematics

Four species have been recorded in Europe, GlobiZ lists 12 species worldwide:
