The Odyssey was a Liberian crude oil tanker that broke in two parts in the Atlantic on November 10, 1988 and sank with its cargo of over 130,000 tons of crude oil.

history

The ship was on a voyage from Sullom Voe in the Shetland Islands to Come By Chance in Newfoundland in November 1988 . The tanker carried an almost full shipload of 132,157 tons of North Sea Brent crude oil , which was to be processed in the come-by-chance refinery. On November 10, the ship broke in two parts and sank during bad weather in the North Atlantic , some 700  nautical miles from Newfoundland. The sinking stern caught fire and ignited the resulting oil slick around the ship.

Due to the severe sea and weather conditions, the Canadian Coast Guard was unable to get closer than 1.75 nautical miles to the burning ship. Due to the large distance of the spilled oil of 700 nautical miles to the nearest coast, no oil control measures were taken as it was expected that the oil would dissolve naturally. The crew of 27 did not survive the sinking.
