Location of Oeding in North Rhine-Westphalia

Oeding is a district of the community Südlohn in the district of Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia . Until 1969, Oeding formed an independent municipality in the old district of Ahaus . The town hall of the community Südlohn is located in Oeding.

geography

Oeding is in the west of the municipality of Südlohn on the German-Dutch border . The former municipality of Oeding had an area of 20 km². It included the village Oeding and farming communities Nichtern and Oeding.

history

The history of Oeding goes back to the Nonern farmers with their main farm Oeding, first mentioned in 1147. In 1353 the main courtyard in Oeding, on which there was a castle, was sold to Prince-Bishop Ludwig von Münster . A village settlement was formed under the protection of the castle. Over time, Oeding belonged to the Principality of Münster for centuries, to the Principality of Salm from 1803 and to the French Empire from 1811 to 1813 .

After the Napoleonic era , Oeding fell to Prussia and belonged to the mayor's office in Südlohn in the Ahaus district founded in 1816. With the introduction of the Westphalian rural community order in 1844, the mayor's office in Südlohn became the Amt Südlohn, which only consisted of the one community of Südlohn. In 1883 the Südlohn office was abolished and the Südlohn community was incorporated into the Stadtlohn office.

On April 1, 1907, Oeding was detached from the Südlohn community and raised to a separate community. With the establishment of a weaving mill in the same year, industrialization and an economic boom began.

On July 1, 1969, Oeding came back to Südlohn through the law on the reorganization of communities in the Ahaus district .

In the recent past Oeding became known nationwide due to the calf fattening scandal .
