The Oendui ( Indonesian Danau Oendui , English also Lake Enduy ) is a lake on the Indonesian island of Roti in the province of East Nusa-Tenggara , on the Lesser Sunda Islands .
geography
The Oendui is located in the Landu Leko district ( Rote Ndao administrative district ) on the Tapuafu peninsula , which forms the north of the island of Roti. To the east is the administrative seat of the district, the place Daeurendale . Depending on the water level and the season, the area is between 50 and 100 hectares. Unlike the large salt lake Usipoka located to the north, the Oendui is a freshwater lake. The lake is framed by a flat savannah with black earth and tropical dry forest on low karst hills .
fauna
The Oendui is the type locality of Chelodina mccordi roteensis , a subspecies of the McCord's snake-necked tortoise . Due to strong persecution, the occurrence of the subspecies is only limited to the area around the Oendui and the nearby Lake Undun and is also on the verge of extinction here. On Roti, researchers are urgently calling for a protected area, for example on the Tapuafu peninsula with the lakes Usipoka, Undun and Oendui and the surrounding, untouched wetlands of Tanjung Pukuwatu . Since this area has a high level of biodiversity , there could be animal species that are still unknown to science.
