Tapuafu is a peninsula on the Indonesian island of Roti .

geography

Tapuafu forms the northeast tip of the island. The Sawu Sea lies to the west, the Roti Strait to the north and the Timor Sea to the east . The isthmus, which connects the peninsula in the south with the rest of the Roti, is framed by the Bay of Korobafo to the west and by the Bay of Pepela to the east . Off the east coast are the island of Usu and the much smaller island of Boti . The Strait of Usu lies between Usu and Tapuafu , and the Bay of Maeoe near Boti . In the north is the island of Nusa Bibi .

Tapuafu is characterized by a number of lakes, including the largest on the island, the Usipoka Salt Lake ( Danau Oesipoka ). Others are the Undun and the Oendui, known for its great biodiversity . In between there are wetlands, savannas and tropical dry forest. For years, researchers have been urging a sanctuary that includes Lakes Usipoka, Undun, and Oendui and the surrounding, pristine wetlands of Tanjung Pukuwatu .

Within the government district ( Kabupaten ) Rote Ndao , the peninsula forms the district ( Kecamatan ) Landu Leko . The main town is Daeurendale , near the isthmus in the south. Other places on the peninsula include Nordale and Korlo on the west coast , Bolatena and Sotimori in the interior in the west and Roti in the northeast.

fauna

The last specimens of Chelodina mccordi roteensis , the eastern subspecies of the McCord's snake-necked tortoise , can be found on the Oendui and Undun . Due to intensive hunting for illegal, international animal trade and the loss of habitat, like the species on Roti in general, it is on the verge of extinction here too.
