Ogura Yuki ( Japanese 小 倉 遊 亀 , actually: Mizogami Yuki ( 溝 上 ゆ き ); born March 1, 1895 in Ōtsu ; died July 23, 2000 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction during the Shōwa period .

life and work

Ogura graduated from the secondary school in Nara in 1917, specializing in Japanese and Chinese literature. She then took over a position as a teacher at the Yokohama Sōshin School for girls in 1919, but also began studying painting under Yasuda Yukihiko . Her talent was quickly recognized by Kobayashi Kokei and Hayami Gyoshū . In 1926 she won her first award with the picture “Cucumbers” ( 胡瓜 , Kyūri ) at the 13th Inten, ie at the annual Nihon Bijutsuin exhibition . - Ogura then exhibited at the Inten in the following years and was accepted as a “friend” of the institute in 1928 with her painting “Early Summer” ( 首 夏 , Shuka ), which Kaburagi Kiyokata rated as excellent.

At the 13th Inten, Ogura submitted a picture entitled “Strawberries” ( , Ichigo ), which qualified her for full membership in Nihon Bijutsuin. She then focused on happy, intimate subjects and became known for her pictures of women, for her nudes, all of which are humorous with a touch of abstraction. In 1953 she won the "Uemura Shōen Prize", in 1954 the Minister of Education's Prize ( 術 選 奨 文 部 大臣 賞 , Geijutsu senshō mombu daijin shō ), in 1956 the Great Mainichi Prize for Fine Arts and in 1962 the Prize of the Japanese Academy of Arts and became a member of the academy in 1976. In 1978 she was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 1980 she received the Order of Culture .

Representative works by Ogura are "Bathing Women" ( 浴女 そ の 一 , Yokujo sono ichi ; 1938), "Bathing Woman" ( 湯 浴 み 女 , Yuami onna ; 1939) in the Tōkyō National Museum , "Little Yu's Break " ( コ ー ち ゃ ん の 休 日 , Yū-chan no kyūjitsu ; 1960) and "dancer" ( 舞 妓 , Maiko ; 1969) in the Kyōto National Museum .
