The Without coal Festival was a year in Vienna held forming Film Festival . The activities have been suspended since the planning of the sixth festival in 2009 (as of December 25, 2009).

It is devoted, albeit not exclusively, to state-unsubsidized or little-funded independent films and videos and searches for content and technical innovation in the domestic film scene. Without coal wants to show that the first impression of a financial hurdle can be overcome with easily accessible technology and an independent implementation concept. The originality of the film should take precedence over the production technology ( 35mm film or cheap video ).

history

The festival has taken place annually since 2004 and understands "Without Coal" also in terms of content, as a social mission. That is why there is always a special topic on social issues, where commercial or significantly funded works are also shown. In 2004 the special topic was poverty , in 2005 it was human rights / human dignity and in 2006 globalization . All proceeds go to a charitable organization that fits the topic: In 2004 it was Caritas , in 2005 Amnesty International and in 2006 the Association Project Group Integrationshaus.

Thanks to international partnerships, the number of film submissions in 2004/2005 for a young festival was very high: in 2004 there were over 1000 films / videos, in 2005 this number was increased by around a third. As with almost all film festivals in German-speaking countries, there are no submission fees and every submitter can take part in an extensive range of workshops, some of them free of charge.

Until 2005 the festival was organized together with international partners. However, internal disputes ended this cooperation. Since 2006 the focus has been on regional submissions, Austrian films .
