Olaf Werner (soccer player)

Olaf Werner (born January 4, 1960 ) is a former German soccer player. He played for Stahl Riesa and Chemie Leipzig in the 1980s in the GDR Oberliga , the highest league in GDR football .

Athletic career

Before Olaf Werner played his first games in the GDR Serie A, he played until 1976 for Dynamo Dresden in the junior league and to 1980 in the junior league . In 1979 he was with the young Dynamo GDR champion after he was regularly used as a midfielder and had proven himself as a multiple goalscorer.

For the 1980/81 season Werner moved to the top division Stahl Riesa. There he was used in the first half of the season in defense and in midfield in eleven of the thirteen league games. In the second half of the season he was no longer called up in the league and the BSG Stahl was relegated to the GDR league . In the 1981/82 season he was in the first two league games as a substitute, after which he was no longer used at Stahl Riesa.

After completion of the first half of the season, Olaf Werner left Stahl Riesa and moved to league rivals FSV Lokomotive Dresden , where he played the remaining eight league games mainly as a defender and scored his first goal in the higher division. For the 1982/83 season Werner was announced as a defender, in fact he was used in midfield and attack and was the Lok team's top scorer with six goals. For 1983/84 he was reported as a midfielder following reality. As such, he also played the first six league games, in which he scored two goals again.

Werner was on the field for BSG Chemie Leipzig on matchday 9 of the GDR league. Still called up in midfield, he played the remaining 18 league games in which he scored three goals. At the end of the season, Chemie had to play two relegation games against tied goal 1. FC Union Berlin . With 1: 1 and 2: 1 the Leipziger secured the relegation, whereby Werner was used in both matches. Out of 26 league games in the 1984/85 season, Werner was able to play 19 games and was again successful with three goals. This time BSG Chemie could not keep the class. In the GDR league season 1985/86 34 point games had to be completed. Under the new coach Manfred Fuchs Werner was initially only a substitute player, only from the 15th day on he was regularly used in midfield, so that he finally came to 29 league games. With his six goals he showed himself to be an accurate shooter. In the 1986/87 season, when Chemie continued to play in the GDR league, Werner found it difficult to get going. He only got into the point games on the 6th matchday, initially three times as a substitute. This was followed by two appearances in the starting line-up on the 14th and 15th matchdays, but on the second appearance he had to leave the pitch prematurely due to a foul. Only in the second half of the season did he consolidate himself to the extent that he played nine league games over 90 minutes, and there was another game as a substitute. In the end he came to 15 league games with another three goals.

At the end of the 1986/87 season, Werner's career as a competitive footballer was basically over. He returned to FSV Lok Dresden, which played in the third class district league in 1987/88 . In 1988/89 he tried again in the GDR league at BSG Progress Bischofswerda , where he only played three point games at the start of the season. During the first half of the season he moved to the GDR league newcomer, activist Borna , but only played one league game there. Later, Olaf Werner no longer appeared in the higher leagues.
