Old Irontown is a ghost town in Iron County , Utah , and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

After 1852 and the takeover by the Deseret Iron Company , the Pioneer Iron Company relocated the coking plant and blast furnace from Cedar City , where production had started 3 years earlier under the leadership of Parley P. Pratt , one of the Twelve Apostles , 30 km west to Old Irontown . Production included household items such as nails, hooks and rods. Since the hard coal from nearby Coal Creek was of poor quality due to its high sulfur content , it was switched to charcoal . In 1884 the plant was abandoned due to legal disputes and moved to another location by the Iron Manufacturing Company of Utah . After the federal government began enforcing the Edmunds-Tucker Act against multiple marriage in Utah in 1884, many of the Mormon leaders had to go into hiding, which ended the development of a self -sufficient steel industry in Utah. A coke oven, a Göpelmühle of primitive design, which finely ground sand for use in the blast furnace, is well preserved to this day . The foundations, parts of a chimney and walls are still preserved from the foundry itself. Most of the site was fenced off for protection by the Sons of Utah Pioneers , an association dedicated to researching and preserving the history of Mormon pioneers . On May 14, 1971, Old Irontown was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a site .
