Old Orchard Shoal Light was a lighthouse in Lower New York Bay used to mark a shoal . The beacon was put into operation on April 25, 1893. On September 20, 2006, the structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places and listed as a landmark lighthouse in the National Park Service's Maritime Heritage Program . The structure was destroyed on October 29, 2012 by Hurricane Sandy .

The lighthouse, built in 1893, was about 5.5 km south of New Dorp Beach on the Gedney Channel in Lower New York Bay on a 0.72  acre property that was washed over by the tide. The tower consisted of a 10.5 m high construction made of cast iron , which contained the approximately 90 m² apartment of the lighthouse attendant on three floors . Inside, the walls were covered with bricks up to the third floor . The Fresnel lens was removed in 1950.

Frank Schubert, who is said to have been the last civil lighthouse keeper in the United States, was stationed here before being transferred to Governors Island and finally to Coney Island Light .

On May 29, 2007, the Secretary of the Interior ruled that the Old Orchard Shoal Light Station Committee was under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000.

No group was found that was willing and able to preserve the structure under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. Therefore, the General Services Administration put the Old Orchard Shoal Light up for sale through an auction from June 2008. It was knocked down on August 27, 2008 for $ 235,000  .

During October 29, 2012, the structure was completely destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
